Savanna Haze at Lake Louisa - Giclée Print
Savanna Haze at Lake Louisa - Giclée Print
As I began my hike to a favorite clearing near Pine Point at Lake Louisa State Park, a cool, breezy day was interrupted by the sudden dimming of sunlight. Overhead a large cloud appeared as if from nowhere, obscured the natural light, and threatened to release rain on my inaugural plein air session. I was steps into my hike back to the iron horse when the overwhelming smell of burnt wood hit my nostrils. Somewhere beyond the bounds of the park, someone had lit a controlled burn of local scrub vegetation to deplete the compounding dried leaf debris that threatened to become a tinder box for heat lightning in the upcoming Florida summer. Surrounded by the signs of a recent similar burn in the park, I hastily set up my easel and captured the scene as haze descended on the clearing. As I blocked in the background and foreground ashes from the smoke plume fell on my canvas and mixing palette that inevitably were brushed into the composition.
